How to Treat Sunburn

1/26/2025

Assess the Burn

Carefully examine the affected area to determine the severity of the sunburn. Look for redness, pain, swelling, and blistering.

Cool the Skin

Apply a cool compress or take a cool bath or shower to help reduce inflammation and soothe the burn. Avoid extremely cold temperatures.

Moisturize

Apply a moisturizer or aloe vera gel to help hydrate the skin and prevent dryness and peeling. Choose fragrance-free lotions.

Hydrate

Drink plenty of fluids, especially water, to help your body recover from sun exposure and prevent dehydration.

Pain Relief

Over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help manage discomfort associated with sunburn.

Avoid Sun Exposure

Stay out of direct sunlight until the sunburn heals completely. Use sunscreen with a high SPF when you need to go outside.

Watch for Complications

Monitor the burn for signs of infection, such as increased pain, swelling, pus, or fever. Seek medical attention if necessary.
